Traditional halyard chanty from the days of whaling. Chanties were call and response work songs, oftentimes sarcastic or vulgar, used to coordinate the effort to haul a heavy sail to the top of the mast while underway. Great effort was required so it was important for the 8 member crew to pull the halyard (heavy rope) in unison - a task that was not always successful, especially as the exhausting work went on. The chantyman's job was to lead the crew with improvised verses until the sail was fully aloft.
